If you are expecting a hardcore fantasy epic, there is the Game of Thrones book sadly lacking. There is nothing Westeros and it is Seven Kingdoms have to offer which you cannot discover in every other medieval setting, save for seasons that last many the mysterious beings called the 'Others' lurking within the great Wall within the north. Instead, Martin supplies a different kind of fantasy, one which focuses on the human aspect from the story. Take away the dragons and also the magic and you will probably see that the gritty man's instinct continues, driving the primary plot of political intrigue, conflicts, and ambition that compel you to commit acts of murder, rape, or worse.

Still, it's enough fantastical elements within the form of knights, dragons, kings and queens, princes and princesses, and also the whispers of magic working behind the scenes. It is War from the Roses inside a fantasy world. For someone who enjoys reading both fantasy and historical fiction, Martin's masterpiece can be a godsend.
I admit that close to 800 pages can be a lot of take in, even for one of the most avid of readers. Thankfully, Martin's talent is within producing words that provide enough information, but stops short of being tedious. While Martin won't win awards for beautiful prose, his writing keeps people engaged. The book never feels dragging and I appreciate more an author that can keep my attention before the end in lieu of one that waxes lyrical.

Well the actual in mid 2010. The book continues to be in the process of being written. Six numerous years of writing a "partially completed" book. With two more books meant to come from then on! It is extremely frustrating to become a fan.
All that negativity aside, there is really a good reason that fans of his books gripe and vent but still wait after a college hiatus accompanied by a six year hiatus. The books are simply that good.

I will supply him with his due, he takes time while he wants to only released an outstanding product.
More positive news is that there is really a HBO miniseries, which is forthcoming, according to this series. With the quality in the books, and the quality that HBO does with their series, I expect it's going to be great. Perhaps the HBO leg breakers will hold his feet to the fire in completing his novels.
I hope that MR. Martin will decrease his many side projects, convention attendances and book signings and simply get to the writing. This includes minimizing his involvement with the HBO series. Trust it is at good hands, George. There will only have more and more fans clamoring for his next book release as soon as the series is released. Get to it George, were waiting.

The best and most frustrating thing concerning the book is the story is told from eight different perspectives, with each perspective held within a chapter. Just as you commence in relation to a character and therefore are wanting to see how are you affected to him (or her), you are thrown off for several chapters.

Yet Martin's character development is also the thing that makes the books so enjoyable to learn. His method of creating three-dimensional characters using a lots of depth, feeling, and back story is what keeps your readers from losing interest.
The determination from the 13-year-old exiled princess and child-bride, Dany; the bleak coming-of-age story from the bastard, Jon Snow, on the northern Wall; the raw emotions of young, tomboyish Arya at King's Landing; the noble intentions of Eddard Stark amidst a court of mummers; and the sarcastic wit from the impish Tyrion Lannister are just a few from the assorted cast of players you will find yourself rooting for with this bloody game of thrones.
When he did release that book, he left us with hope. That book and the sequel were to be essentially one large book spread into two parts. With a huge cast of characters spread allover the land, Mr. Martin made a decision to only pinpoint the character in one part from the world, leaving the development from the rest from the characters prior to the next book. But there was clearly hope! A lot from the chapters were already written. "Gosh! He must have it out by Christmas 2007 for sure", I remember thinking in 2005.
